What is a VPS?
A VPS or Virtual Private Server is a Virtual Computer. You have full control over the Operating System and the software that is installed. OzHosting.com provides two types of VPS, a Windows 2003 Server and a CentOS Server.
A VPS is cheaper than a Dedicated server solution as you are only paying for a Virtual Environment and not for the hardware as well.
Why do I need a VPS instead of Shared Hosting?
A VPS offers more customisation abilities compared to the Shared Hosting environment however it requires more technical knowledge.
You would use a VPS if:
• You run a Popular website that uses a large amount of resources
• You want to provide additional services like a Games server, Anonymous FTP, etc
Advantages to a VPS:
• Full control over the Operating System
• Able to install any application as required
• Able to control software versions, custom server modules, etc
You should not use a VPS if:
• You do not require additional resources for your Website
• You do not know how to Administer a Server yourself
Disadvantages to a VPS:
• You are responsible for all software on the VPS and no support is offered
• Server Management Knowledge is required Administer a VPS
• You will need to setup the Web, FTP and any other Services yourself
• You will need to manage the firewall settings in the VPS
What Support is offered for VPS Subscriptions?
VPS Subscriptions are Unmanaged services, this means that OzHosting.com can only provide Support if there is an issue with the Virtual Container itself.
Any issues occurring within the VPS are the responsibility of the VPS User. This includes issues with software installations, firewall management, service management and internal user management.
If you wish to host websites upon your VPS you have three options for your DNS Management as a VPS Subscription does not come with DNS Management:
• External DNS Management
• Purchasing a DNS Subscription through OzHosting.com
• Running your own Nameserver on the VPS
